I've been freelancing for the past few years (along with waiting tables)....
I used to work for an internet company before getting laid off.
This past week I did have a phone interview with a company called SBI Group.
I think it's time to get back in the game :-)

I work a large national bank as a distributed systems architect & engineer. Basically, I sit around all day and determine the viability or game plan for managing or implementing enterprise-wide apps. Wheeeee!

Moonlighting: *trying* to run my own multimedia production firm. Like, when I'm not working 60+ hours a week for the bank.

I'm an aspiring web-designer with experience in print. (freelancer)
I was in charge of computer repairs on my school campus.
I have experience running and managing restaurants. (family business)

I also volunteer my services for non-profit orgs, and gave workshops to college lgbt organizations on starting/improving their own web-sites.

I've been considering volunteering my services for non-profit orgs. May I ask what approach you use to identify what non-profits would like to utilize free/inexpensive web development services?

      Thanks,
      Steve

Temp. Current assignment is scanning hardcopies of documents into pdf files then updating a database to search for said files. Some minor administrative stuff, too (e.g., "we're out of paper again!)

Sell used books on-line on the side.

    I'm a software project/product manager.
Or was til the last round of layoffs. But thankfully the companies and recruiters have been calling and I have a few interviews. I've been involved in end user training, healthcare and financial industries.

Still, if anyone has a contact at Expedia, Amazon or Microsoft, I'd love to hear from you.

In addition to this, I've embarked on Landscape design and have been having great fun making changes in our yard as well as working up designs and plans for family and friends.

I've been working keyboards since before "word processing" existed. I even worked on paper tape "automatic typewriters". That experience led me into data processing and programming. When PCs came out, I figured my career was over because soon everyone would see how easy it is. Throughout the late 70's & 80's I worked for large and small consulting and/or development firms and twice I was in-house, and a brief while, I was independent.

Since 1989 I have worked in-house at a small insurance company doing mainframe DBA and application development. Now in the middle of rewriting everything to SQL and VB.net.

I'm burned out. My next career move.... I want to be a bus boy at an outdoor cafe in Palm Springs.

Computer tech support, former medical software developer and software design manager.

Funny that for about 4 years I ran an in-person group in San Francisco called "Gay Geeks" at a time when you could put that phrase into Google or Yahoo and get absolutely nothing back. Now, there are over 6000 hits on that phrase.

I'm a freelance web programmer, well, a struggling one. (By the way, if any designers would like to subcontract out PHP/MySQL work, please contact me).

I'm considering going back to college after being away for 16 years... my current idea is to get a MUP (Master of Urban Planning) with an emphasis on GIS and/or E-government, but I'm still considering all my options. I already have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science (concentration in Comp Sci), but I'm not interested in going for a masters degree in that.

I'm a systems engineer/project manager. I used to be strictly a systems engineer in a distributed environment, mostly on the Unix side (AIX, Solaris, Linux, NAS Filers,) designing and implimenting environments. With recent downsizign, most of us need to fulfill more than one job requirement so I was put in a 'project services' group. I'm still doing systems works, and additionally i'm having to manage multiple projects as well.

i find i'm liking the project management stuff and I'm pretty good at it. Is that wrong?

    Currently:
I have a day job doing inventory management for a big box home improvement retailer. A very geeky job using mobile cart with wi-fi connected tablet pc. Great job, crappy pay.

    On the side:
I operate a web hosting/web development company with my biz partner. It's a 50/50 partnership which holds it's own and pays us a little each month, but not enough to quit the day job yet.

    Formerly:
Above hosting/web development company DID pay enough for both of us to live on. This was before losing three key clients.

    Before that...
Webmaster/web developer for small company here in town. Things were much better in the wallet then.

Living an alternative life, in a industry that has still a long way to go. ASIO, XAML, C#, Digital Modelling, filters luv those filters.

      Formerly:
Manager Information Systems for group of three financial service providers.

      Before That:
Service Centre Technician, Systems Engineer, Technical Director, Lighting Engineer, Internal Auditor.

I am the technology director for an educational institute, which affords me the opportunity to work with some truly fascinating people on some on interesting and important research projects. Still, it's not all fun and games. The bureaucratic entanglements are many and the politics can be vicious.

I see this thread has been dormant for a while (long while). But what the hell, why not? I'm new here. Besides, I'm sure some of you guys might want to update! So here goes, let's resurrect the thread!

I'm a freelance graphic designer, working mainly with print, but getting more into web design. Always looking to pick up new work, especially in this economy. After all, I'd like to continue living indoors and eating food.
