Well, I've been trying to get "back in the game," again...after being laid off in 2000. I've been sending out resumes and interviewing over the past few months and my experience therein has been quite odd.
I had an interview today in Cambridge for an IA position. And in the midst of phone interviews for two other positions. One is a six week contract position and the other is with a company I'd really like to work for.
Said company has been really good about calling when they say they are, etc.
I interviewed with the HR person, and then a partner in the co. My next phone interview was with the head of the regional office, to which I'd report. It was a really odd phone call, at least from my perspective. I didn't feel like I had a good report with him. At one point he put out a scenario, asking what I would do. Two seconds later he says, "...and that was a question." I said, "I know, I'm thinking...". It just really put me off for some reason. So who knows where that will lead....

Sat, August 14, 2004 - 12:06 PMThanks. Since then I've also had a phone interview with razorfish for a short contract project. I talked to two folks and am waiting to see if they want me to come to NY for an interview...
A friend of mine who's also a graphic designer wants me to help him with clients who might want a web presence as well. Which is good, but we have to put together a site and some examples, etc. so who knows when I might make any money from that....

Sat, August 14, 2004 - 3:01 PMOh I urge you not to take the position with the guy you had the bad report with. I had an interview before I got my current position and it was very awkard. The guy actually asked me what I thought he though of me. This is after he insulted my intelligence telling me that it's hard to work for him because most people are not as smart as him. So simply replied that "this interview seems to be a total waste of your time and you seem to be a total waste of my time." He was shocked. Anyway, they called me back the next day and offered me the freaking job. I simply said, "You must be joking." and hung up the phone. I would never want to work in a company with a boss like that. -

Sun, August 15, 2004 - 7:46 AMI know...the sucky thing is is that I think I'd really like this job. It's for HFI (Human Factors International) doing heuristic evaluations, interface reviews, and usability testing. Stuff I love.
I haven't heard back from them, so I think tomorrow I'll call the HR guy that I've spoken with originally to see if he's heard anything.

Thu, August 19, 2004 - 5:06 PMI've been looking for the past 8 months and finally had an interview a few weeks' ago. It went very well except they don't have a position. They want someone on a freelance basis but it doesn't sound like they'll actually have much work. When I left it sounded like everything was more or less set. He asked me to send him an email detailing my fees, etc. and that he would contact me to do some work before the end of the month because the studio would probably be empty as everyone is on holiday. I need to phone tomorrow and see what's up. I have probably found everyone ad agency and designer in Spain via one manner or another and have received many excited replies but nothing have come of any of them. It all depends on contacts in the creative world and even more so here in Spain.
Ron, I would also advise you not to take the position with the guy that you had the odd rapport with. -

Sat, August 21, 2004 - 1:14 PMI did speak with HR at HFI; I don't think it's a go on their end anyway...HR said the hiring manager was still interviewing folks and that if I hadn't heard back from him that I might not. Oh well.
Knowing me, I'd do better as a contractor/freelancer. I'm not cut out to work 9-5.
I'm supposed start working with a friend who's a graphic designer, so hopefully that'll work out. I'll be going down to NYC first week of Sept to meet with him and work on his website. I'm thinking about starting a blog to document my new job endeavors....and my own education as a better freelancer :-)
